What happened to the middle class?

Heard last night on PBS News Hour.

The top 1% of income earners control more wealth than the bottom 90% of earners.

No wonder we have problems! We need a strong, vibrant middle class in order to have a strong, vibrant nation. end

And how do you propose we go about establishing a strong and vibrant middle class?

I might be able to make an educated comment after I read, "Winner Take All Politics" by Jacob Hacker and Paul Pearson.

Evidently our tax system is stacked against middle and lower income earners and the result is that for many of those people we would call middle class, the take home -adjusted for inflation pay - has not changed much since the 1970's.
